WELCOME TO "LAS GUACAMAYAS BIOLOGICAL STATION"
"Las Guacamayas Biological Station" (named after the Scarlet Macaw (spanish: Guacamaya roja) is a tool for conservation and research of the mixed heritage of South-East of the Laguna del Tigre National Park in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve located in the northern Guatemala in the department Petén. We also promote sustainable “Alternative Tourism" with the participation of local communities and strategic partnerships with the public and private sector. This approach is embedded by our social and environmental responsibility, which means to promote and actively work on the protection and conservation of the natural and cultural resources of the south-east part of the Laguna del Tigre National Park as well as support capacity building and sustainable economic alternatives for its neighboring communities.
The landscape around the Biological Station consists of forested area in which species like the Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), jaguars (Panthera onca) and tapirs (Tapirus bairdii) can be found, These species are indicators that the tropical an humid forest is in a quite healthy state. Beside the wetlands of the upper San Pedro River basin are key to the hydro-biological cycle regulation and maintenance of freshwater reserves in the country, which are heavily affected by anthropogenic presence.
For these reasons it is necessary to strengthen conservation and investigation efforts in an integrated manner by involving the surrounding communities.
