Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas

Scientific research program

Scientific research program is an important pillar of Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas and the primary reason for our existence into Laguna del Tigre National Park.

Within the rainforest where Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas is located, there are many species of important biological and conservational significance, including the Scarlet Macaw (Ara Macao Cyanoptera), Jaguar (Panthera Onca), the wild pig (Tayassu Pecari), the Petén Crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii), the white turtle (Dermatemys Mawii), Tapirs (Tapirus bairdii), and a wide variety of other species of fauna and flora.

Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas is of interest to many researchers working with wild fauna or flora. Priorities for research in Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas are included research on climate change, the toxicity of rivers (San Pedro, Sacluc and San Juan), and the growth rates of rainforest trees.

Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas provides the necessary infrastructure and a comfortable working environment for all scientists. We also have trained staff available to assist investigators.

Since the Estación Biológica Las Guacamayas is located within the Laguna del Tigre National Park, all research projects must request special permission from the National Council for Protected Areas (CONAP), who are the administrator of National Parks in Guatemala.  Each researcher must also register as an investigator with CONAP. It is advisable that the application to perform the relevant studies at the Station should be submitted at least two months before the start of the investigation.

If you are interested submitting an application, please contact us.
